Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi 20 Temmuz 1982'de İzmir il sınırları içerisinde kurulmuştur. Rektörlük yerleşkesinin Alsancak’ta bulunduğu üniversitenin İnciraltı, Tınaztepe, Dokuzçeşmeler yerleşkesi ile toplamda 4 yerleşkesi bulunmaktadır. 74.506 öğrencinin eğitim gördüğü üniversite İzmir'in  köklü üniversitelerinden biridir.
